Hey! I resemble that remark!

I am reading a book called Tiny Habits, The Small Changes that Change Everything by BJ Fogg for a class.

When looking for CEU’s I picked this one because it seemed like a useful skill set to have when working with people who had bad food habits. I started the book and just really could not get into it. Not because it was uninteresting in general or I disagreed but because to me it was telling me all the things that I do already. I have really been forcing myself to read it and do the accompanying work but the last little bit has tweaked other areas of my brain and I really want to contact the author and ask him if he has thought about other applications.

I don’t use his techniques for creating change or habits I finally realized, I use them for creating joy & happiness in my life. Finding small things that spark dopamine production in my brain is how I taught myself to deal with anxiety, sadness or even trauma. A small child might get scared or anxious and grab onto their “blanky”. I do that but with experiences to trigger a calming happy feeling. A teenager may feel out of control so finds ways to create a feeling of power by controlling something only they have access to, their eating habits for instance. When they feel out of control they may go to the store and buy pounds of sugar laden treats to release that same feeling of happiness. If this habit goes on long term they may find themselves coping with life as an adult by binge eating when they feel anxious or out of control. I retreat. I find a quiet corner and I write, sometimes blogging, sometimes writing stories. It’s a way for me to create, and creating makes me feel accomplished, and in control.

I would recommend this book and practice to people who are looking for other options for their behaviors or to just get more insight into why they may be having trouble changing certain habits.

The brain is a fascinating thing.
